At Oakes we welcome students and many young people studying at the local university and colleges worship with us regularly. From time to time we also enjoy hosting lunches after the morning service – and watch out for services led by the students themselves.
We maintain strong links with the Huddersfield University Christian Union and over the years it has been a joy to support students from all over the country, and from countries all round the world.
Over the years, students worshipping with us have gone on to serve God in other countries from the USA to Moldova, Hong Kong to Russia

Great preaching, contemporary music – and fun and fellowship. But don’t take our word for it – come along and try it out for yourself.
Here’s what Briony, one of our students, says: “Stepping out in your faith at University can be a really hard thing. Finding your own church without your parents or your church back home to rely on can be really scary. Coming to Oakes was like stepping into a family. On my first visit I was welcomed in and spoken to by many different people and even invited to lunch (which carried on every Sunday!)
“Since then I have been encouraged by the whole Church to get involved in Oakes life, helping with the children and leading prayers; they have also been a huge support of my role within the CU. One thing in particular I like about Oakes and I think the reason that God placed me there is the variety of people who have a heart for God’s Mission both in the community and at Huddersfield University.
