About Us
Meet the Minister and Youth Minister

We may be just a group of ordinary people, but we believe in an extraordinary God.

We recognise the Bible as God's revealed word, totally relevant for living in a modern world. What's more, we believe that Jesus Christ, God's Son, is the Saviour of the world. And we believe that the Holy Spirit is active today. Our faith is based on recognising that all people are in need of God's forgiveness and that he gives that through faith in Jesus Christ.

We also recognise that we are part of the wider Christian family. We are members of the Evangelical Alliance, the Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Yorkshire Baptist Association.

Our Minister
Our minister, Rev Ian Burley (pictured) has well over 30 years experience in the ministry and a real heart for outreach. He joined us in 1992 from his previous role as Director of Evangelism for the Baptist Union of Wales, having been pastor of churches in Abergavenny, Teignmouth, Devon and Liverpool. Ian combines the serious (having completed an MTh at the University of Wales) with a sense of fun - watch out for his reputation as a practical joker!
Youth Minister

Richard Carter is our youth minister and runs a programme of events covering all ages. Richard has been part of the church for several years and was working for a local company until God called him to take responsibility for the young people at Oakes - whether or not they were already connected with the church.

Outreach worker

Kim Carter is our outreach worker, running a whole range of activities for girls of primary and high school age, with an emphasis on fun! Kim is also someone that God called to Oakes. A qualified social worker, she has made Huddersfield her home - even though her roots are on the south coast

Assistant Minister

A few years ago Nathan Toseland came to study at Huddersfield University and was to meet his future wife, Bryony, at Oakes. Following a spell in the North East, he is back at Oakes, as assistant minister. Gifted in many ways (and especially musically) his interest in football is summed up in a passion for both Chelsea and Kettering Town!
